A Denver police officer has been arrested as part of a felony theft investigation for allegedly billing a private employer for off-duty hours for which he did not work.
The department’s Internal Affairs Bureau initiated an investigation in October against Officer Ryan Roybal, 45, after receiving information that Roybal “had not been present for several scheduled shifts of a non-department paid off-duty job,” according to a Denver Police Department news release.
Roybal was arrested on Tuesday evening, police said.
Investigators reviewed surveillance video provided by the employer and compared the evidence against the officer’s timesheets, finding several shift discrepancies valued at about $8,860 for work that was not completed, the release said. The police investigation will be presented to the Denver District Attorney’s Office for consideration of filing of criminal charges.
Roybal, who joined the department in 2014 and is assigned to the patrol division, was placed on unpaid administrative leave at the time of his arrest.
Police officers convicted of a felony forfeit their eligibility to work as a sworn police officer in Colorado.
