Denver weather: Cooler temperatures on the way with a chance of storms

Friday could be a decent day to get outside if heat and smoke have deterred you recently. Cooler temperatures, better air quality and a chance of showers will make for a more pleasant day. It’s the beginning of a pattern that could persist for some time.

According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, there’s a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms between 3 p.m. and midnight Friday. Denver will reach 88 degrees under mostly sunny skies, with clouds building later in the day. Large hail and strong winds will be possible, along with heavy rain in areas where serve thunderstorms develop. Temperatures will drop to 61 degrees overnight.

Denver will be under an air quality alert for the 41st straight day Friday. While smoke has moved out, ozone concentrations are expected to reach an unhealthy level for sensitive groups across the Front Range. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment still recommends against prolonged outdoor exercise, but the air quality is much better according to IQAir. Denver’s AQI was 33 early Friday morning, which is the best it’s been at any time in over a week.

Saturday should reach 90 degrees under sunny skies with a 10% chance of precipitation, dropping to 62 degrees at night.

Sunday will also touch 90 degrees with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. It will be a mostly clear day with a low of 62 degrees.
