Dylan Mulvaney and scores of celebrities including Amy Schumer and Alyssa Milano call for social media giants to CENSOR ‘malicious lies’ about ‘medically necessary’ gender transition therapy for kids in letter organized by LGBT group GLAAD

  • The group of more than 250 famous faces have called for Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok to censor the ‘disinformation’ surrounding trans healthcare
  • Dakota Fanning, Dylan Mulvaney, Gabrielle Union-Wade, Haley Baldwin Bieber, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jonathan Van Ness have also signed the letter

Dylan Mulvaney has joined scores of celebrities and influencers calling for social media giants to censor ‘malicious lies’ about ‘medically necessary’ gender transition therapy for children.

The letter, organized by the LGBT group Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), claims that ‘online extremists’ are proactively coordinating ‘campaigns of hate and lies about gender affirming healthcare for trans youth.’

Gender transition surgeries for children under the age of 18 is outlawed in a number of states across America – banning puberty blockers and hormone therapy.

Now the group of more than 250 famous faces have called for Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to censor the ‘disinformation’ surrounding trans healthcare.

Dylan Mulvaney has joined scores of celebrities and influencers calling for social media giants to censor ‘malicious lies’ about ‘medically necessary’ gender transition therapy for children

The letter was addressed to CEOs of the biggest social media platforms – Mark Zuckerberg of Meta Platforms, Neal Mohan of YouTube and Alphabet, Shou Zi Chew of TikTok, and Linda Yaccarino and Elon Musk of Twitter.

It states that: ‘Dangerous posts (both content and ads) created and circulated by high-follower anti-LGBTQ hate accounts targeting transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people are thriving across your platforms, directly resulting in terrifying real-life harm including bomb threats targeting children’s hospitals that offer healthcare for trans youth, and death threats targeting care providers.’

And speaking directly to the CEOs, the letter said: ‘Your policies and corresponding enforcement are inadequate when it comes to mitigating harmful and dangerous anti-LGBTQ content.’

Alyssa Milano, Amy Schumer and Ariana Grande are among dozens of celebrities and influencers who have signed the letter.

They join Camila Cabello, Cynthia Nixon, Liza Koshy, Marc Jacobs, Shawn Mendes, Zooey Deschanel and Demi Lovato as signatories.

Dakota Fanning, Dylan Mulvaney, Gabrielle Union-Wade, Haley Baldwin Bieber, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jonathan Van Ness have also signed the letter urging the tech CEOs to change their ways.

Hailey Bieber and Amy Schumer are among the signatories

Musical couple Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes have also signed the letter – as well as actress Alyssa Milano

Gabrielle Union-Wade and Ariana Grande also signed the letter

Mulvaney – a transgender influencer with millions of followers on her platforms – has come under scrutiny in recent months for her collaboration with Bud Light. It was a business deal that cost the once-beloved beer brand millions in sales.

They have called for the tech companies to address four main points, including content that ‘spreads malicious lies and disinformation about medically necessary healthcare for transgender youth.’

The signatories also want the firms to tackle ‘accounts and postings that perpetuate anti-LGBTQ extremist hate,’ ‘dehumanizing, hateful attacks on prominent transgender public figures and influencers,’ and ‘anti-transgender hate speech, including targeted misgendering, deadnaming, and hate-driven tropes.’

GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis

The letter was signed off: ‘We speak together with one voice to demand that your companies create and enforce stronger content and ad policies to directly confront the content that is causing online and offline harm to transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people.’

GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis, said: ‘It’s about time that social media CEOs hear from leaders on their platforms whose content and creativity drive profits and revenue for them.

‘It’s clear these creators and celebrities recognize that social media companies should be taking urgent action to address the pervasiveness and severity of viral hate and misinformation about LGBTQ, trans and gender nonconforming users, but instead such anti-LGBTQ content drives profits for the companies and is too often met with inaction.

‘You can draw a direct line from online hate and misinformation about trans people to the hundreds of anti-trans bills across the U.S. as well as the rise in violence against LGBTQ people.

‘Until social media platforms take real action, our community continues to be at risk.’

The above map shows the 20 states where restrictions on transgender care for minors have been brought in. Three of the states that have had their care bans suspended are Oklahoma, Arkansas and Alabama

Earlier this month, Texas became the 17th state to outlaw gender-affirming care for teenagers.

Republican Governor Greg Abbot signed a bill banning puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgery for under-18s wishing to transition.

Medical providers who violate the law — set to come into force from September 1 — could have their licenses revoked.

Texas is the largest state to bring in the restrictions to date, being the second largest nationwide and has a large transgender community. Opposition groups have already blasted the law as ‘jeopardizing’ healthcare and vowed to file a lawsuit.

The move comes barely two weeks after Nebraska also restricted transgender care for minors as more Republican states seek to block the treatments.

State governor Jim Pillen signed into law a ban on hormone therapy, puberty blockers and surgery for under-19s wishing to change their sex. In Nebraska, someone is defined as a minor until they turn 19 years old.
