Emmanuel Macron has been called out on Australian TV over France’s response to the decision to cancel a lucrative submarines contract. Last week, Canberra announced plans to sign up to a new supply deal with the US and UK which would see the Australian Navy provided with nuclear-powered submarines as opposed to diesel ones. The pact came amid a wider alliance known as AUUKUS to counter the rise of China in the pacific region.
Mr Bolt told Sky News Australia: “France is now throwing a tantrum.
“Because our government has torn up our $90 billion deal to get France to build a slower less effective diesel submarine.
“That’s out nuclear submarines in.
“France, the country that we helped to defend in World War I, at huge cost in lives, the country we helped to liberate in World War II, has now recalled its ambassador in protest and is now calling on other members of the European Union to freeze out Australia from a new free trade agreement,” he added.
It comes after Australia scrapped the order of French submarine technology in favour of a new alliance with the US and UK which will see the Australian Navy kitted out with new nuclear-powered subs.
Correspondent Teri Schultz has since told DW News that President Macron was not the only European leader that was angry at being left in the dark about the AUUKUS deal.
Ms Schultz told DW News: “France is furious.
“It lost tens of billions of Euros in this submarine deal which Australia has now canned.
Liz Truss: 'Gross failure of French intelligence' left Macron blindsided
“Frances does not like to not be consulted, I mean no European country wants to be left out.
“But France certainly considers itself a player.”
“It doesn’t like it when it doesn’t get any word whatsoever that this is happening.
“But France isn’t the only one, you know Joseph Borrel, the EU foreign policy chief just said a short time ago today that he hadn’t been consulted.

“That he didn’t know anything about the deal and that it must have been in the works for some time.
“So he clearly didn’t please either.
“But certainly not as outraged as France.
“Whose foreign minister went as far as to say this reminded him of the Trump years.”
