‘Time to heal and nurture me now!’: Fergie hopes her breast cancer has been ‘caught in time’ after undergoing surgery following shock diagnosis
- Sarah, 63, had a single mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer
The Duchess of York hopes her breast cancer has been ‘caught in time’ and is now recovering at home after undergoing a single mastectomy.
In response to a message from friend Piers Morgan wishing her support, Fergie replied: ‘Time to heal and nurture me now!’
She added: ‘Hopefully caught in time x thank you,’ Mr Morgan revealed in The Sun.
Sarah, 63, said she had shown no obvious sign of the disease and owes her life to NHS staff who picked up a ‘tiny shadow’ during a routine mammogram, before ordering further investigations.
Mr Morgan described the response from Sarah as the ‘first time I’d ever heard her speak about the need to put herself first’, adding that it took a ‘life-threatening moment’ in order to do so.

In a podcast recorded on Monday last week – the day before she went in for surgery – the former royal admits she almost didn’t attend her appointment because she didn’t want to travel into London on such a hot day.
She was nagged to go by her sister and says it appears that the cancer has been ‘caught in time’.
The duchess says the experience has left her with a new zest for life and a determination to use her position to encourage people to get screened for cancer, of all types.
Of her taking time to focus on herself, Mr Morgan said: ‘It’s typical of her to instantly try to turn such a negative experience into a positive, but very untypical of her to suspend her astoundingly selfless instincts and focus instead on helping herself.
‘I’m very glad she is though, because the world’s a better place with a healthy vibrant Sarah Ferguson in it.’

A spokesman for the duchess announced on Sunday that she had recently been diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer and had undergone successful surgery.
She is recuperating at Royal Lodge in Windsor where she lives with her ex-husband, Prince Andrew.
The Mail understands that the duchess informed the King and Queen of her condition early last week before she went into hospital on Tuesday.
She underwent several hours of surgery at the private King Edward VII’s Hospital in London before being discharged on Saturday and will spend five to six weeks recuperating at home.
Speaking on Tea Talks, a new podcast she co-hosts, Sarah said: ‘It was after bank holiday, I live in the Windsor area, it was a hot day, I didn’t feel like going to London. Easy to put it off.
‘My sister from Australia is wonderful and I normally do what she says, because she gets so cranky.
‘She said, “No, I need you to go”. Thank you, Jane.’

The mammogram picked up a hint of an abnormality, so staff investigated further using a special dye which is injected into the patient’s vein before they are given an MRI scan to create a clearer picture of the possible cancer.
The duchess said: ‘I went to the Royal Free Hospital [in Hampstead, north London] with the NHS, amazing work there. A really big shout-out for the NHS.’
She added: ‘I want every single person that is listening to this podcast to go get checked, go get screened, go do it.
‘Don’t say it won’t happen to you, doesn’t matter if you feel fine. Cancer can be silent, such a silent little hiding thing. Go get screened, go get checked. Don’t wait.’
Sarah said she would use the experience as a catalyst to change her life, whether it be by climbing mountains or trying to make the most of every moment of being a grandmother, adding: ‘I am taking this as a real gift to me to change my life.
‘To nurture myself. To stop trying to fix everyone else.’
The duchess is a grandmother of three. Princess Beatrice has a 21-month-old daughter, Sienna, while Princess Eugenie is mum to August, two, and four-week-old Ernest.
