Former doctor who drugged a child and forced him to sexually abuse a girl tied to a bed faces dying behind bars

A TWISTED ex-doctor who drugged a child and forced him to abuse a five-year-old girl who was tied to a bed is facing being caged for the rest of his life.

Robert Wells could die behind bars after being found guilty of the historical sexual offences in West Sussex.

The 69-year-old monster drove an eight-year-old boy to his homemade film studio on an industrial site and told him he would be a film star.

He then took him into a large windowless room where a young girl was already tied to a hospital style bed, with a television-style camera in the corner of the room being operated by another man.

Wells, who used to work as a police surgeon before he was struck off, ordered the boy to abuse the girl.

The boy, who is now in his 30s, was reluctant but did as he was told as he was filmed by the second man in West Sussex, October 1998.

He is facing a life sentence after being convicted of a series of sexual offences against five young people in Brighton, West Sussex, Hampshire and the West Midlands between 19 and 25 years ago.

Wells was convicted of two count of indecent with a boy aged eight and one count of attempting to possess an indecent image of a child at Hove Crown Court yesterday.

He is already serving two sentences for sexual offences against other youngsters in Hampshire and South Wales, where he used to work as a GP, as a result of separate investigations.

Wells was also a GP in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, until his arrest in 2003 and subsequent conviction and sentencing in 2004 to 15 years for sexual offences against young girls in Hampshire.

'SYSTEMATIC & SERIAL SEXUAL ABUSER'

After being convicted of those convictions he was struck off the medical register and banned from practicing as a doctor.

When he was released on licence, he was then sentenced to seven years behind bars for four indecent assaults against three young girls at Cardiff Crown Court in April 2017.

He had previously pleaded guilty to 16 other offences including one count of indecent assault on a 15-year-old girl in West Sussex in 1998, while supposedly conducting a medical examination of her at his surgery in Portslade.

The ex-GP also admitted one indecent assault in Coventry in 2002 on an 18-year-old woman he knew as well as two rapes and seven indecent assaults on a girl aged nine in 2001 – one in the West Midlands and the rest in Brighton.

Wells also pleaded guilty to four offences of taking an indecent photograph of a child – all against the same girl – one in the West Midlands and the others in and around Brighton.

Another conviction was for an 18-year-old woman who was indecently assaulted in Southampton in 2002, who he had already been convicted of sexual offences against in 2004.

But the Sussex Police investigation uncovered new video evidence of him assaulting her that was only detected due to new technical developments since the offence took place.

All the offences included evidence that Wells used drugs to help ensure his victims complied with his sick demands, police said.

Judge David Rennie told Wells he will consider all options at his sentencing hearing in September, including a life sentence.

Detective Constable Owen Watkins of Sussex Police described Wells as a "systematic and serial sexual abuser".
