The Europhile French President was also accused of obediently following in the footsteps of German chancellor Angela Merkel after she too suspended its use. It comes over unfounded accusations that the jab can cause blood clots.
Respected experts have rubbished the claims, insisting that they are no more prevalent among people vaccinated than the normal population.
Yesterday morning French Prime Minister Jean Castex insisted his country had “must have confidence in the Astra Zeneca vaccine”.
It had already been given to one million people in French and was set to be crucial in inoculating the country’s population.
But within 12 hours, Mr Macron performed a stunning U-turn and suspended its use.
This led to an outcry among observers and the French public alike.
Prominent French politician, François Asselineau tweeted: “Castex has injected AstraZeneca to 1 million French guinea pigs.
“He must resign.”
Frexit campaigner Patrice Cali was equally scathing.

He said: “He is responsible for having injected this vaccine, now suspended, to 1 million French people!”
Politician Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, President of Debout la France and member of the National Assembly, wrote: “By suspending the AstraZeneca vaccine, Macron is making his government look bad.
“Prime Minister Jean Castex told us last night that he was completely sure!
“The executive sails blindly, no longer thinks for itself and only knows how to follow Germany’s footsteps”
And MEP Jean-Paul Garraud said: “Last night again Jean Castex declared that he had no reason to suspend AstraZeneca.
“Maybe it would be good for the Prime Minister to be on the same page as the President. This confusion can only disturb the French.”
MEP Helene Laporte, from France’s far-right National Rally party, was even more brutal.
She simply said: “We are ruled by incompetent people.”
The backtrack emerged as France’s vaccine rollout continues to lag far behind the UK.
This has created the prospect of it being in lockdown for two months longer than Boris Johnson’s country, the research company Airfinity estimates.
Imperial College London also estimated that lockdown costs up to £18billion a month – allowing the early release date to earn the UK up to an extra £36billion – when compared with France.
These continued failures have turned many French voters off the president at a crucial time in his first term.
He goes to the ballot box next year and is currently neck and neck with main contender Marine Le Pen, according to the latest polls.
