Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent security demands caught senior royals "off guard", a royal commentator has claimed.
The couple have not publicly returned to the UK for a joint visit since they abdicated their royal responsibilities at the start of 2020.
And, in a recent letter to the Home Office, the prince claimed the lack of a return might be fuelled by security concerns, after he filed a claim for judicial review against the Home Office decision not to allow him to pay for his own security while in the UK.
In the letter, lawyers acting for Harry gave five specific reasons why Harry requires special police protection, including the risk of extremist threats and to ensure his children's safety.
Now royal commentator Neil Sean has scrutinised the Sussexes' need for security, and suggested the letter might hint at an intention to have more public appearances.
“One might speculate that they want to come back to pump up their PR," Neil suggested in a new video on his YouTube channel.
"After all, Harry’s got his book out later this year, and Meghan Markle has that ‘Pearl’ production coming through Netflix, so all eyes on them if they return."
In the letter, a legal representative stressed: “The UK will always be Prince Harry’s home and a country that he wants his wife and children to be safe in.”
But Neil noted that with the Royal Family currently finding themselves in difficult circumstances, the couple’s “diva demands” are way down “the pecking order”.
“They grandly announced via a letter to the Home Office that they wish to return," he said.
"Apparently this has caught senior royals off guard because they had no idea about this.
“And more importantly if you wish to see our gracious Majesty the Queen, it would be manners at least to book in an appointment.
He added: “Someone like Princess Anne only actually has protection when she’s on royal duties, so it’s not a 24 hour round the clock thing.
“Security is only really needed if they’re planning to do things. After all, so many people who are famous – and who think they’re famous – go around their business without the need for security in this great country.

“So perhaps Harry and Meghan have something a little more visible, hence the reason that they have to be sure that they have some security.”
The Sussexes lost their taxpayer-funded police protection when they quit as senior royals and the letter alleged that Harry’s offers to personally pay for security had been dismissed.
Representatives for the Sussexes have been approached for comment.
