Heavy snow and flooding set to sweep across UK as ‘Arctic blast’ cold snap bites

Heavy snow and floods are to sweep across Britain this week before temperatures are sent plummeting.

The Met Office has issued "National Severe Weather warnings" as the white stuff and wintry showers continue to cause travel misery.

The Environment Agency currently has 45 flood warnings in place – meaning 'immediate action is required' as well as 163 flood alerts.

Weather warnings for snow and rain are in place for many parts of the UK all the way up to Sunday, the Mirror reports.

Scotland is set to face up to 15 inches of snow in some areas with swathes of northern England to be beset by yet more flooding with heavy rain lashing the country.

Yellow weather warnings for snow are in place in the nation, as well as in parts of northern England between now until midday on Sunday.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Mark Sidaway, said: “Into the weekend snow will continue across much of Scotland, and is likely to increasingly fall to low levels before beginning to move south into northern and eastern England.

“We are likely to see some very large accumulations across higher parts of Scotland especially, with strong winds leading to significant drifting and blizzard conditions at times.

“Although amounts of snow across England are likely to be less, they could still cause some problems as we go into the weekend.”

A spokesman added: "Snow and ice have already caused disruption this week closing some transport routes etc. National Severe Weather warnings have been issued throughout the coming week.

"Next week will stay chilly for much of the UK with brisk easterly winds making it feel even colder. However, the weather is potentially drier than this week. Our 6-30 day forecast currently points to the likelihood of cold conditions continuing into mid-February."

Forecasters at the Met Office have warned of 'prolonged periods of snow' as well as 'snow showers' that could bring with it 'significant disruption.'

The office urged people to be aware of the potential for power cuts, mobile phone coverage outages, as well as long delays and cancellations on bus, rail and air travel.

Communities could also be cut off for 'several days' and lengthy interruptions to power supplies as well as other utilities could occur.

Forecasters said people should expect 'heavy rain, with some snow melt at first, probably leading to some flooding and travel disruption.' It comes after widespread flooding and heavy snow has already battered many parts of the UK.

Meanwhile, the rest of the UK, in central and southerly areas will be milder, but with some rain scattered around.

Today: Rain continuing across Northern Ireland, south and east Scotland and northern England.
