Hundreds answer the call to honour volunteers for the Queen Consort’s Coronation Champions Awards designed to celebrate those who go the extra mile in their communities in a historic year for the nation

Hundreds of entries have poured in for the Queen Consort’s Coronation Champions Awards, with more than a third directly from Daily Mail readers.
The initiative, backed by the Mail, has been designed to celebrate the millions of volunteers who go the extra mile in their communities across the country in this historic year of celebration for the nation.
Charities and community organisations, including the NHS, are being encouraged to nominate unsung local heroes to stand a chance of winning a once-in-a-lifetime prize.
A total of 500 champions, hand-picked by a team of experts, will receive a specially-designed Coronation pin and signed certificate from the Queen Consort.
The winners will also receive an invitation for themselves and a guest to attend one of the official Coronation celebrations, such as the headline Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle. The awards are being organised by the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) of which Camilla is president.

The RVS said it has been overwhelmed by the response so far since the awards were launched on Monday. Chief executive Catherine Johnstone said: ‘I know there are many more people out there with astounding stories to be told, and I want to encourage everyone who has the good fortune of knowing a dedicated volunteer, to step forward and nominate them for this once-in-a-lifetime award, because they really deserve it.’
Volunteering has been identified as a key component of the Coronation celebrations in tribute to the King’s lifetime of public service, as well as the Queen Consort’s own work in fields as diverse as domestic violence and literacy.
Nominations for the Coronation Champions awards are open for anyone over the age of 14.
Entrants will be judged on ‘demonstrated impact, initiative, inspiration, and involvement’ in volunteering over the last five years, apart from the younger candidates.
