Iran: US military fly B-52 bomber over Middle East
The general with Islamic Republic’s Revolutionary Guard Corps made the statement after a week after Joe Biden’s inauguration. Mr Biden has said he wants to talk with Iran after tensions between Tehran and the US hit breaking point under the previous Trump administration. An Iranian commander has now said Tehran has the ability to sink US warships.
The Iranian commander’s statement has shown the Islamic Republic is liable to continue its hostilities with the US.
The general, Rahim Noei-Aghdam, said the Iranian military has the capability to destroy US Navy ships that come close to Iranian territory.
General Noei-Aghdam, speaking to the state-run Mehr News Agency, said: “If once the US presence in the international waters near Iran was considered as a threat to the country, today thanks to our deterrent power and surface-to-surface, surface-to-air, surface-to-coast, coast-to-coast, coast-to-sea and sea-to-sea missiles, we have the ability to destroy American ships.”
The Iranian general leads his core unit from the Hazrat Zeinab Military Base.

Last week the Iranian army performed a military exercise in the Gulf of Oman.
New US president Mr Biden said he wants to reengage in diplomacy with Tehran after Donald Trump pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal.
President of Iranian Hassan Rouhani has said he is willing to re-enter the nuclear agreement with the new administration in the White House.
The agreement allows for the removal of sanctions levelled against Tehran in exchange for compliance with its nuclear program.
This week US general Frank McKenzie said both Iran and the US are entering a “period of opportunity” with the new Biden administration.
General McKenzie said: “Largely, they have been able to tell their proxies this is not the time to provoke a war.
“Not all of that is probably the result of the military component.
“I’m sure there’s a political calculation in Iran to get to a new administration and see if things change.”
However, tensions are still high as Israel said this week that it will attack Iran if the US collapses sanctions against Tehran.
