‘It doesn’t feel like work!’ – mum spices things up with surprising new career

When it comes to decision making do you play it safe, or seek out fun and adventure?

If you fancy yourself as a thrill seeker, then Zinger Popcorn is for you.

To celebrate the launch of Zinger Popcorn Bucket – available for a limited time only – we decided to champion people who like to spice things up, including Hannah Murphy, 36.

When she reached a career crossroads in 2012, Hannah struck out on a new adventurous course, and almost a decade on has no regrets about her bold decision.

"When I was made redundant from my eight-year career as a flight attendant, flying both domestically and between the UK and Japan, I saw it as an opportunity set myself a new challenge, and have new adventures," says Hannah who lives in Southampton with her husband and three children, Angelina, 13, Archie, 10 and Adriana, five.

"At the time I was a single mum of one after my previous relationship ended, and the ‘sensible’ decision would have been to take a 9-5 desk job, something stable but didn't challenge me. That’s just not me though, I have to love what I do and find joy in it every day."

Instead, Hannah trained as a fitness instructor and began to incorporate a hula hoop into her training.

"It wasn’t just a useful exercise tool, great for toning and core strength, it was so much fun. The moment I started hula hooping, I was transported back to my childhood, it was really liberating."

As word got out about Hannah’s hula hooping prowess, friends and family began to ask for lessons, followed by requests from local schools for Hannah to come in and teach children how to hula hoop.

"It snowballed and before I knew it, I had so much interest in hula hooping fitness classes, I had to train other instructors to help me. I went on to create a training programme called Globe Fit and today I have teachers all around the world, from Australia to America, all teaching my programme.

"I love teaching hula hooping, particularly adults, because they might start off a bit self-conscious and inhibited but soon their inner child is released and they just go for it!

"I’ve taught people aged from teenagers to eighty-year-olds. Last year, I hosted the first ever world hula hooping championship, which will be taking place again later this year."

After launching the UK's first hula hooping championship in 2019, which took place in Fareham, Hampshire, Hannah decided to go global in 2020. Not even a pandemic could stop her with the event going virtual and around twenty-five competitors, women and men of all ages and abilities, taking part from as far afield as India, America and Australia.

"I had a panel of four judges, including John Parnell aka Hoop Guy who appeared on Britain's Got Talent in 2017. Competitors submitted videos of themselves performing with their hoop, and were marked on everything from skill to tricks they could do, with the panel judging the videos.

"The second world championship will take place in December this year, again virtually, and I hope to have even more people taking part.

"It’s amazing to be a part of people experiencing something new and fun, it doesn’t feel like work!"
