The quake, of 7.2 magnitude, hit 57 km north-east of Sendai-shi 15 min ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) has reported.
One user posting on the EMSC’s site said: “I was outside walking when the earthquake came. I saw the electric posts shaking.”
Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami advisory.
As a precaution, people living near coastal areas have been advised to move to higher ground.
