Joe Biden will ‘push’ for Europe defence spending says expert
Joe Biden will today become President of the United States following a fraught campaign and election result. Mr Biden will be the oldest President in US history at 78-years-old, and will also see one of the most scaled back inauguration ceremonies in history due to the coronavirus pandemic and security concerns.
The usual extravagant inauguration ceremony has been pared back following violent demonstrations at the US Capitol on January 6, led by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump.
The Democrat will take the oath of office before US Chief Justice John Roberts just after 12pm local time (5pm GMT), placing his hand on an heirloom Bible which has been in the Biden family for more than a century.
The ceremony will take place in front of a heavily bolstered US Capitol, where a mob of Trump supporters stormed the building two weeks ago, enraged by his false claims November’s election was stolen with millions of fraudulent votes.
Also in attendance will be Mr Biden’s family, including his wife Dr Jill Biden.

How many children does Joe Biden have? Who is Hunter Biden?
Joe Biden’s wife Dr Biden will become First Lady today, and unlike the outgoing President Trump, Mr Biden’s family are considerably less well-known.
Mr Biden has been married twice, first to Neilia Hunter Biden in 1966.
He had three children with Neilia, Joseph R Biden – known as Beau – Robert Hunter Biden – known as Hunter – and Naomi Christina “Amy” Biden.
Tragically Mr Biden lost his wife and one-year-old daughter in a car crash while they were Christmas shopping in Delaware on December 18, 1972.
Their sons Hunter and Beau survived the accident with minor injuries.
Mr Biden is said to have considered ending his career to care for his children, but Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield persuaded him not to.
In 1975 Mr Biden met Jill Tracy Jacobs, a teacher, on a blind date.

They went on to marry at the United Nation’s chapel on June 17, 1977, and had a daughter together – Ashley Blazer Biden.
Mr Biden credits Jill with helping him reignite a passion for politics and life.
However, tragedy struck the Biden family once more in 2015, when 46-year-old Beau Biden died of brain cancer.
Beau had been an Army Judge Advocate in Iraq and later Delaware Attorney General.
Today Ashley Blazer Biden, 39, is a social worker, activist philanthropist and fashion designer.
Her older brother Hunter, 50, is a Washington attorney and investment advisor.
Hunter was a target of exiting President Donald Trump during the 2020 presidential campaign.
Mr Trump accused Hunter of receiving “millions of dollars” from China, Moscow and Ukraine in an attempt to discredit Joe Biden ahead of the 2020 election.
However, a House Judiciary Committee investigation report for Trump’s impeachment found there was no basis to the accusations of Hunter behaving improperly.
Soon-to-be First Lady Dr Jill Biden, 69, is a professor of English at Northern Virginia Community College.
She has vowed to keep teaching full time even while living at the White House.
Speaking during the campaign trail in 2019 Dr Biden said: “How great would that be?
“What would that say about teachers? Wouldn’t that lift up the profession and celebrate who they are? It would be my honour.”
