A model has sparked international outrage for wearing a dress with a noose to a major film festival’s red carpet in protest of a series of executions in Iran.
Iranian-born model Mahlagha Jaberi has split opinions with her divisive dress that she wore to the red carpet of the renowned Cannes Film Festival on Saturday (May 27).
She was snapped wearing a dress that had a noose sitting around her neck, which she said was “dedicated to the people of Iran” in the caption of a video posted to Instagram, which also had the hashtag “#StopExecutionsInIran.”

Iran has executed several of its citizens in recent weeks by hanging them, many of them being political dissidents.
The regime has carried out at least 90 executions in the last 18 days, marking May as the “bloodiest month” in the nation over the last five years, according to the Norway-based Iran Human Rights group.
Despite this, many commentators condemned the 33-year-old model for her dress, with one saying it was an “absolute disgrace” for her to wear the dress and then “film a seductive video using a song that has become an anthem for protestors.”
Meanwhile, advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Anton Gerashchenko, wrote on Twitter that he thought her choice was a brave one.

“More than 200 people were executed in Iran this year alone. Another brave woman. Maybe if women were the majority in politics, there would be no more wars? What do you think,” he said.
Jaberi said in a followup post yesterday (May 29): “We wanted to make a fashion statement to observe the glamour of Cannes, but more importantly, to bring media attention to the wrongful executions of Iranian people.
“Unfortunately, political statements are not allowed at the film festival and the security stopped me from showing the back of my dress, but the “noose” meaning was well understood.”
