‘Multiple casualties’ as flats collapse with emergency services rushing to scene

A building has collapsed in a US coastal city, with emergency services at the scene.

Eighty fire engines have been dispatched to Collins Avenue in Surfside, Florida, the US.

The Miami Fire Department confirmed it was dealing with a "partial building collapse".

The building in question appears to be Champlain Towers South, an apartment complex close to the beach, with fears of multiple casualties.

Footage from the scene shows rubble lying on the floor next to a hotel.

Miami journalist Joel Franco shared a picture of people gathered in the street, claiming they had been “rescued” from the building”.

The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue service tweeted: "#MDFR is on scene of a partial building collapse near 88 Street & Collins Avenue.

"Over 80 MDFR units including #TRT are on scene with assistance from municipal fire departments.

"Updates will be provided on Twitter as they become available."
