Pamplona runners are trampled by rampaging bulls and tossed in the air

Crushed by bulls: Yet more Pamplona runners are trampled by rampaging beasts and tossed in the air as festival draws to an end

  • Thousands of bull runners ran for their lives today during final day of the San Fermin Festival in Pamplona

Thousands of bull runners ran for their lives today during the final day of the San Fermin Festival in Spain with many being crushed and trampled on by the bulls in chaotic scenes.

In a blur of red and white, the runners sprinted along the streets of Pamplona today, trying in vain to outrun the stampeding beasts behind them.

But the bulls, seeing red, were too quick and stormed into the crowd, their sharp horns sending the frantic runners into the air before they landed on the hard ground below.

Some would get a second hit and be trampled by enraged bulls stampeding towards them during the eighth and last day of the San Fermin Festival.

At least five runners were transferred to hospital due to injuries sustained during the event, according to emergency services.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of American author Ernest Hemingway’s first visit to the festival, which he made internationally famous in his 1926 novel ‘The Sun Also Rises’.

Rooted in history and folklore, the exhilarating events draw both locals and tourists who seek a thrilling and unforgettable experience – but in recent years the tradition has been widely condemned for its treatment of the bulls, many of whom sustain significant injuries or are killed.
