Proof Yorkshire puddings really ARE a part of Christmas dinner? A third of Brits choose them as one of their seasonal must-haves
- The survey of Britain’s top festive traditions placed the puddings high on the list
Traditionalists claim it’s a festive faux pas, but a survey suggests that Yorkshire puddings may well have a place on our Christmas dinner plates.
While rightfully the centrepiece of a Sunday roast, it has long been held that ‘Yorkies’ should be served with red meats such as beef but not white meats like chicken – or the Christmas turkey.
In a sign of changing tastes, however, the survey of Britain’s top festive traditions placed the puddings high on the list.
A total of 36 per cent chose it as one of their seasonal must-haves – above such staples as watching Christmas specials on the TV (chosen by 32 per cent), Christmas Eve drinks with friends (27 per cent), and a game of charades (19 per cent).
Unsurprisingly, roast turkey came near the top of the list with 57 per cent choosing it, along with mince pies (52 per cent) and Christmas stockings (47 per cent).

The survey also found that four in ten have created their own Christmas routine, while 27 per cent admit they still follow the customs they had when growing up (Stock Image)
But spending time with family members was considered the best thing about the Christmas holidays for 77 per cent of those polled.

And among the newer trends to prove popular among those surveyed, posting Instagram snaps of the family festivities was on the must-do list for 10 per cent.
A spokesman for Churchill Insurance, which commissioned the survey of 2,000 customers, said: ‘It’s great to see that traditional activities like hanging a stocking still feature alongside modern ones such as streaming Christmas specials and Yorkshire pudding on the lunch plate.’
