The Australian city has been shattered by its first fatal shark attack since 1963 at Little Bay. Disturbing video footage of the killing has emerged with the man recording the video expressing his disgust at the spectacle.
He said: “Someone just got eaten by a shark.”
Huge splashes can be seen in the water as the shark drags the swimmer under while the water turns red.
A torso can be seen in the water before the shark drags the victim underwater again.
Emergency services were then called to the beach near Buchan Point, Malaba
They then located the human remains of the swimmer and closed the beach.
However, as a New South Wales Ambulance spokeswoman said there was nothing the emergency services could do for the man.
She said: “Unfortunately this person had suffered catastrophic injuries and there wasn’t a lot paramedics could do when we arrived.”
Sydney University academic and author of the book Flaws: Shark Bites and Emotional Public Policymaking, Dr Chris Pepin-Neff, told news.com.au that attacks of this magnitude were “incredibly rare” and the swimmer was targeted by a “particularly nasty shark”.
He said: “There have probably been only 10 or 12 attacks of this kind in the last 30 years in the entire world.
“It’s not crazy for sharks to bite humans thinking we might be prey.
“What’s exceptionally rare is for a shark to bite a human and then to bite them again.
“It was a repeated engagement that led to catastrophic outcomes.
