Thunderstorms to spoil 29C heat dumping month’s worth of rain in two hours

The UK has been blessed with extraordinary weather over the last two weeks with temperatures across the country out stripping traditional Mediterranean hot spots.

May was pitiful weather-wise but June came to the rescue giving Brits the summer they deserve after the toughest 18 months in recent memory.

And Monday is proving to be a scorcher giving those with a sore head after England's win in its tournament opener on Sunday something else to smile about.

London and the parts of the south east are seeing temperatures just shy of 29C while much of the rest of the country basks in glorious sun, giving Mondays a whole new meaning.

The UK's stunning weather could come to a blistering stop on Wednesday though with forecasters predicting rain.

According to The Sun around 50mm of rain could fall in some areas in just two hours on Wednesday, which would equate to a month's worth of rain.

While the UK has been enjoying a band of high pressure sitting on top of the country it is expected that a cold front will start to move in.

The Met Office warning said: "Some places are likely to see thunderstorms later Wednesday through to Friday with the potential for travel disruption and flooding."

Temperatures still could remain hot though despite the thunderstorms with BBC Weather also predicting changeable conditions.

BBC Weather said: "Wednesday will be cloudy with showers in the north and west. The southeast will see plenty of sunshine and it will be a hot day but may see heavy showers later in the evening and overnight.

"Thursday may have some heavy and thundery showers for much of England, but it will be cloudy elsewhere with scattered showers. Friday will bring patchy cloud and scattered showers for all."

The bookies still believe that even with predictions of rain June's weather will still see the UK notch up its hottest summer ever.

Coral's Harry Aitkenhead said: "This summer has began with a bang weather wise and the scorching June temperature means not only is this month odds on to break the record as the warmest since records began, the summer of 2021 as a whole is on course to be our hottest ever."
