Two Kenosha, Wisconsin, cops at the scene of the police shooting of Jacob Bake are back on the street after being cleared of wrongdoing.
Police Officers Vincent Arenas and Brittany Meronek, who were on the Aug. 23 domestic violence call when Blake was shot seven times in the back by another cop, were returned to active duty after months on administrative leave, USA Today reported Thursday.
Kenosha cop Rusten Sheskey, who fired the point-blank shots that left Blake paralyzed during the caught-on-video incidet, remains on leave, Police Chief Daniel Miskinis announced.
Kenosha County DA Michael Graveley declined to file criminal charges against Sheskey, saying that the cop could argue self-defense because Blake had a knife at the time of the shooting.
Arenas and Meronek, who did not fire their weapons during the encounter, were cleared of wrongdoing in a state-sanction outside investigation conducted by former Madison Police Chief Noble Wray, USA Today said.
Video footage of Blake’s shooting sparked protests in the Wisconsin city — adding fuel to ongoing Black Lives Matter demonstrations over the May 25 police-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Two days after the Blake shooting, Kyle Rittenhouse, an Illinois teenager with armed militia groups protecting businesses from looting in Kenosha, shot and killed two protesters and wounded a third in a confrontation with the demonstrators.
