Brits could see temperatures hot enough to fry an egg on a car bonnet over the next few days as the heatwave intensifies, according to a weather expert.

It comes after people across the nation continued to bask in balmy weather this week, as conditions improved markedly from a damp and cold start to March.

Jim Dale, a meteorologist for British Weather Services said we could be expecting a scorching 30C to bear down in direct sunshine.

He told Express.co.uk: “We expect general highs of 21C (70F) in the warmest spots over the next couple of days.

“But in direct sunshine, it might be possible to record temperatures of 30C, the sort of temperatures which can make it hot enough to fry an egg on a car bonnet.

“This can bring the risk of sunburn, so this is something for people to watch out for.”

The Met Office forecast for today (24 March) reads: "Early fog patches quickly clearing to leave another warm day with plenty of sunshine for most. Very isolated afternoon showers may develop in the north, more likely over eastern Scotland. Cloudier in the northwest with some light rain at times."

Chris Fawkes from BBC Weather meanwhile issued a warning that air pollution could be high in some parts of the country today as a result of the high pressure weather front, with air quality expected to be worst in East Anglia.

He also said that people should not "get used" to the warmer weather, as spring is a notoriously "fickle" season.

Up in Scotland, large queues were pictured at a beach yesterday (Wednesday March 23) as revellers made the most of the rare early spring heatwave.

Edinburgh residents made their way down to Portobello Beach as temperatures hit 17C.

No official weather warnings are in place for the UK today.
