In an unprecedented attack on the European Union, foreign minister Dmitryo Kulebo singled the bloc out for being the “group of partners” which have failed to step up and make the “difficult decisions”. While he praised other western nations such as the United Kingdom and the USA have shown solidarity amid the looming threat of an invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking at a press conference in Kiev, he slammed: “It is much easier to face Russian aggression when you have the support from friends.”

He added how he has “full trust” in Ukraine’s ability to defend the country, but stopped short of saying his nation could do it alone.

But in a humiliating singling out, he praised the United Kingdom for its strong military and diplomatic support of Ukraine before embarrassing the EU for their lack of support.

He said: “I have full trust in some of our partners and the United Kingdom is one of them…

“I understand that we have to work with a group of partners who need to be convinced to be more active, and they need to understand one simple thing.

“A difficult situation cannot be solved without making difficult decisions!”

He added: “Whatever the price of deterrence is, the price of stopping the war is much higher.

“No one owes anything to Ukraine, but as I said in my opening remarks, what is happening here is not only about Ukraine.”

He went on to draw on the 2018 Salisbury Novichok attack and various cyber attacks which have been launched by the Kremlin across Europe as examples that the threat impacts the whole of the European continent and Great Britain.

“It is much easier to face Russian aggression when we have support from our friends.

He added: “What is happening in Ukraine now is important for the entire architecture of the whole of Euro-Atlantic security.”

Germany and the EU as a whole has come under heavy scrutiny for its failure to call out Russian aggression on Ukraine’s border, with many believing the Russian-provided Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which will send Russian gas to the heart of Euripe is a major reason for the silence.

Observers have suggested Germany do not wish to compromise the Russian deal by wielding sanctions or threatening action against the Kremlin for its behaviour in Ukraine.

It comes as recent months have seen Russia amass over 100,000 troops on the border of Ukraine, stretching over to Belarus.

On Tuesday British Prime Minister Boris Johnson travelled to the Ukrainian capital Kiev to throw support behind President Volodymyr Zelensky in the face of a Russian invasion.

Russian premier Vladimir Putin insists the troop build up is a reaction to supposed Nato aggression on his borders.
