What are the rail strike dates and when do they finish? | The Sun

NETWORK Rail and 14 train companies will strike in July and August over continued disputes about pay.

This is on top of separate strikes from train drivers from eight companies but when are they striking?

What are the rail strike dates?

The RMT union, responsible for the strikes earlier this year, has once again decided to take action over pay disputes.

Industrial action will take place on July 27, 2022, with two more days of action planned for August 18 and August 20, 2022.

Around 40,000 rail workers are expected to join in on these strikes, including National Rail, impacting travel across the country.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "They need to get serious about providing an offer on pay which helps deal with the cost-of-living crisis, job security for our members and provides good conditions at work."

On top of this members of union Aslef from eight rail firms have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action over pay.

The train drivers voted by about nine to one in favour of strikes on turnouts of over 85 per cent.

These strikes will take place on July 30, to coincide with the Commonwealth Games.

Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan said they had been forced into action as they had not had a salary rise since 2019.

He added: “We want an increase in line with the cost of living.

"We want to be able to buy, in 2022, what we could buy in 2021.”

The Department for Transport has urged the union to reconsider — saying drivers typically earn around £60,000 a year.

When do the train strikes finish?

Currently, the last strikes planned are for August 20, but more could be added.

After the mass walk out in June, rail strikes have been an ongoing issue.

Andrew Haines, chief executive of Network Rail said: "By announcing even more strike dates, the RMT has dropped any pretence that this is about reaching a deal."

Travel to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham is likely to be disrupted by the two July strike dates.

The event is expected to bring a million tourists to the area between July 28, 2022, and August 8, 2022.

Which train lines are affected by the rail strike?

The RMT strike companies are:

  • Network Rail
  • Avanti West Coast
  • c2c
  • Chiltern Railways
  • Cross Country Trains
  • East Midlands Railway
  • Great Western Railway
  • Greater Anglia
  • GTR (including Gatwick Express)
  • LNER
  • Northern Trains
  • South Eastern
  • South Western Railway

  • West Midlands Trains

Those striking on July 30 with Aslef are:

  • Arriva Rail London
  • Chiltern Railways

  • LNER
  • Southeastern
  • West Midlands Trains

The rail network saw widescale disruption in June, 2022, after 40,000 RMT union members at 13 train companies and Network Rail went on strike.

Will there be any more rail strikes in 2022?

Separately, the union TSSA, which represents ticket office and station staff has said more than 70 per cent of its Southeastern members have also backed strikes.

The independent trade union also stated that members in station grades at Avanti West Coast will hold a one day strike on Wednesday July 27, 2022.

It's not known when the strikes will take place yet, but unions are obliged to give two weeks notice.

Talks between the RMT and Network Rail did resume, after walkouts brought chaos for commuters in June, 2022.

The union had said that it was "not in any rush" to bring in further industrial action in July, however strikes will happen.

While the strike action continues, it is not to the scale of June's walk outs although it could mean the UK sees their railways impacted throughout the summer.
