What we know about deadly Bank Holiday incident near ‘premier party’ nightclub

Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a fatal stabbing outside a nightclub rocked a tranquil Cornish town.

A man in his 30s was pronounced dead at the scene in the picturesque town of Bodmin, while seven others suffered stab wounds.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police continue to probe the events leading up to the tragic incident near the Eclipse Nightclub.

Forensics teams remain at the scene, off Victoria Square, Castle Canyke Road on Monday morning, while a 24-year-old suspect is in custody.

This is everything we know so far about the stabbings as police continue to piece together the circumstances of the Bank Holiday tragedy.

3am 'altercation'

Devon and Cornwall Police were called to the rural lane near the Eclipse Nightclub at around 3.15am on Sunday, April 30 to reports of "a serious altercation".

It was reported to police that a man was in possession of a knife and a number of people had suffered stab wounds.

The Eclipse Nightclub describes itself as "Cornwall's premier party destination" and opens from 10.30am on Friday and Saturday nights.

Victim in his 30s

A man in his 30s was confirmed dead at the scene, while seven other people were injured and taken to hospital.

His name has not been formally released by police, but he has been named locally.

It is understood he was a popular rugby player.

The man is expected to be formally named by police on Monday morning. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Condition update

At least seven other people were injured and all were taken to hospital. None of these injuries were deemed to be life-threatening.

It is understood that five people were later discharged from hospital by Sunday morning while two remained in hospital.

Suspect in custody

Police confirmed that a 24-year-old man from Bodmin was arrested on suspicion of murder as well as attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He remains in police custody.

Det Insp Ilona Rosson from the Major Crime Investigation Team said the incident was "isolated" and she confirmed that police were not seeking anyone else in connection to the incident.

The scene right now

The area near Victoria Square remains cordoned off by police on Bank Holiday Monday morning.

Forensics teams have been seen probing grass verges, bushes and a stone wall in Castle Canyke Road.

Superintendent Rob Youngman, from the East Cornwall Local Policing Team, said on Sunday evening: "This investigation is in its early stages and the public can expect to see a heightened policing presence around Bodmin today whilst enquiries are ongoing.

"Understandably this incident will have an impact on the local community, and our thoughts are with the families of the victims.

"Cordons will stay in place today whilst officers gather information and evidence from the scene."

Appeal for evidence

Devon and Cornwall Police are asking anyone with information which may assist their investigation to get in touch.

Supt Youngman said this could include relevant dash-cam, mobile/video phone and CCTV footage from the area of Victoria Square and along Castle Canyke Road.
