Woman, 93, found dead in freezer after cops ‘odd feeling’ about disappearance

Mystery surrounds the death of a woman who was found crammed into her own freezer.

Police visited the home of Marie Hoskins, 93, on Thursday April 28 for a welfare check after neighbours grew concerned that the former NASA employee hadn’t been seen in several days.

“The neighbours were concerned about not seeing Marie Hoskins for an extended period of time.

“Officers made multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact anyone at the residence and were unable to obtain any information on the whereabouts of Mrs. Hoskins,” a police report said.

Police captain Timothy Wood told reporters that the officers who had tried to contact Marie "had an odd feeling about the situation” and did their best to track her down – trying local hospitals and care homes to see if they could trace the missing woman.

But bizarrely, when officers managed to obtain a spare key from one of Marie’s relatives the following morning, they entered the property in Sebastian, Florida, to find her 64-year-old daughter Michelle Hoskins inside.

Captain Wood explained: “Once inside, officers made contact with a suspect, who initially said she hadn’t seen her either. As officers checked the rest of the home in an attempt to locate Mrs. Hoskins, a deceased body was located inside a freezer in the garage.

“The suspect was transported to the Police Department for questioning as detectives obtained a search warrant for the residence”.

Marie’s daughter went voluntarily with officers for questioning, police said.

While the suspect has yet to be charged, detectives are working with the Medical Examiner and the State Attorney’s Office to establish Marie’s cause of death.

It’s not currently clear when Marie was last seen alive. Her next door neighbour, Brandon Kahn, told WPTV that he “rarely” saw her: "Every now and then I'd see her grabbing her mail or something like that."

Another local, Richard Maloney, said the elderly woman’s death was “sad and kind of shocking”.
