A man who allegedly attacked his wife on the beach attempted to bury her alive in the sand, according to police.
The couple are understood to have happily visited Coronado Beach in California together on Thursday, February 25, before an argument broke out.
Police claim the situation quickly escalated and a man, later identified as Jose Luis Mares III, started attacking his wife.
According to KSWB-TV, Mares III allegedly tried to throw his victim into the water before bringing her near a lifeguard tower.
Under the tower, Mares III tried burying his wife in a hole previously dug up by kids, police have alleged.
Detective Ryan Brennan of the Coronado Police Department said "during a struggle" Mares III is believed to have thrown her "into that hole" and "began putting sand on top of her".
Mr Brennan said the victim also claimed her husband kicked her repeatedly before abruptly stopping.
Mares III then "ran away," Mr Brennan said, but police do not know what spooked him into leaving.

She was taken to a Trauma Centre in San Diego, and later reportedly called 911 on her husband shortly before 9pm on the same day.
Police said the woman claimed Mares III had tried to kill her, and later found him hiding in the garden of a nearby home.
Mares III was charged with attempted murder, assault causing great bodily injury, domestic violence, false imprisonment and a parole violation.
