Kinky monkeys in a sacred forest are pleasuring themselves with stone sex toys

Kinky monkeys in a sacred forest are using stones for sexual pleasure.

The strange phenomenon is happening in Bali's Sacred Monkey Forest, and involves long-tailed macaques enjoying themselves on rocks and stones.

For some reason, the monkeys, known to be some of the laziest on Earth, have started playing with the local landscaping, and now researchers have found that they're using them as sex toys.

According to a new report published in the journal Ethology: International Journal of Behavioural Biology, the strange phenomenon started in 2016.

Co-author, and PhD candidate at the University of Lethbridge in Canada Camilla Cenni told Vice News: “It's hard to give a very solid explanation, but it really seems that they do it because it feels good.

“There is some sort of tactile stimulation from the contact of those stones with their genitals and it feels good, and there is no reason to stop.

“For females, it's a little bit harder because we don't really have an easy signifier of arousal.

I think we can probably confidently say that the free time they have as a result of provisioning, it's a big explanation for stone play.

“But free time is not a sufficient explanation.

“I think it's only part of the story. The other part, it's hard to pinpoint because you would have to see the first monkey doing it.”

And in the report, she adds: “Overall, our data partly supported the 'sex toy' hypothesis indicating that stone-directed tapping and rubbing onto the genital and inguinal area are sexually motivated behaviours.

“Our research suggests that instrumental behaviours of questionably adaptive value may be maintained over evolutionary time through pleasurable/self-rewarding mechanisms, such as those underlying playful and sexual activities.”
