Listen: New music from Paul McCartney, Eric Church, Greta Van Fleet, Bebe Rexha and more

There are a lot of familiar names releasing new music this week: Grammy winners, icons, and a band who knows a thing or two about social distancing (who could forget the line “Ya gotta keep ’em separated” from The Offspring’s hit, “Come Out and Play”?).

It’s an interesting time for music in general, as artists begin to posture for prime position on summer playlists and others prepare for a return to touring later this year. And of course, music award season is seemingly never-ending: The Academy of Country Music Awards are this Sunday and the Billboard Music Awards are a little over a month away on May 23.

So with all of that in mind, we take a listen to the latest from the likes of Paul McCartney, Greta Van Fleet, Young Thug, Eric Church and more this weekend.

Sir Paul releases ‘McCartney III Imagined’

To create this personally curated take on his 18th studio album, released last December, McCartney enlisted the help of a number of artists across genres. Beck contributes a new version of “Find My Way.” Up-and-comer Dominic Fike, who has also worked with Lil Nas X and Justin Bieber this year, added his vocals to “The Kiss of Venus.” And Anderson .Paak, one-half of Soul Sonic alongside Bruno Mars, remixed “When Winter Comes.”

Rockers Greta Van Fleet are back

Greta Van Fleet returns with its sophomore album, “The Battle at Garden’s Gate.” It’s the follow-up to 2018’s “Anthem of the Peaceful Army.” “Garden’s Gate” includes the chart-topper, “My Way, Soon.” The band won best rock album at the 2019 Grammys ceremony for “From the Fires.”

Eric Church’s ‘Heart’

Ahead of Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards in Nashville, Church drops the first of a three-album trilogy. “Heart & Fire” is the trilogy’s title, and, yes, even the ampersand gets its own album. The three LPs will release in consecutive weeks with “Heart” leading the way. It’ll give “The Chief” plenty of new material to add to his setlist as he gears up for his “Gather Again” tour that kicks off in September in Lexington, Kentucky. Church is up for three ACMs this weekend, including the the night’s biggest prize of entertainer of the year.

The Offspring returns after almost a decade

The Offspring is back with the band’s 10th studio album. “Let the Bad Times Roll” is the follow-up to 2012’s “Days Go By.” So what has the band been up to in the past nine years? Well, for one, higher education. Lead singer Dexter Holland earned a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Southern California in 2017. And that could definitely be classified as pretty fly.

Young Thug’s slick ‘Slime Language 2’

Young Thug and his label Young Stoner Life records drop “Slime Language 2,” the sequel to the label’s 2018 compilation album. For the release, he and label mate Gunna released “Ski.” Young Thug charted 14 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 last year, despite not releasing an album. Young Thug also enlisted Drake, Kid Cudi, Travis Scott and Future for new verses.

New songs from The Black Keys and Bebe Rexha

There are a few new singles out now. The Black Keys give us “Crawling Kingsnake” is from the band’s forthcoming blues covers album, “Delta Kream”. It’s the duo’s 10th studio album and was recorded in Nashville. Look for it May 14.

Bebe Rexha released “Sabotage” off her just-announced sophomore album called “Better Mistakes” due out May 7. According to the tracklist, Rexha will work with a slew of artists, including Travis Barker, Ty Dolla Sign, Doja Cat and Rick Ross.
