Colorado has benefited for years from a steady flow of technology jobs coming out of northern California, and now New York is sending a bunch as well.
Datadog Inc. has chosen Denver for its new Western U.S. hub, a move that will bring more than 400 jobs paying an average annual wage of $122,194, the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade announced Wednesday.
Founded in 2010, the publicly traded New York City company provides monitoring and security services for cloud-based platforms in 30 countries. Whole Foods, Peloton, Comcast and Samsung are some of its customers. The company currently has 98 workers at offices on 1200 17th St. in Denver and is looking to hire in sales, marketing, and support. Available positions are listed on the company’s career webpage.
“Datadog is made up of excellent team members all over the world, and we’re excited to expand the team in Denver,” said Datadog CEO Olivier Pomel in a release. “This new office will help us serve customers in the region and grow our business.”
In November, the Colorado Economic Development Commission agreed to provide Datadog, then called Project Rover, with $5.4 million in job growth incentive tax credits in return for creating 433 jobs over eight years in the state. The Denver Economic Development & Opportunity office also recruited the company.
Datadog is just the latest in a series of economic development wins for the state. On Tuesday, COEDIT announced that Crusoe Energy, founded by two Kent Denver graduates in 2018, would add 286 jobs at its expanded Denver headquarters. The company currently has 58 employees, including 20 in Colorado.
Crusoe Energy repurposes flare gas at remote oil and gas well sites to power electric turbines. That electricity powers mobile data centers packed with servers that can crunch away at complex calculations, including cryptocurrency mining.
The new positions will be in operations, engineering, safety, environmental, accounting, finance, legal, human resources, technology, business development and sales and marketing. The average annual salary across all the new jobs will be $122,795.
“These 280 high-quality jobs are a great example of the opportunities available when we unlock the power of clean energy technologies. We are proud to have this homegrown company continue to expand in Colorado,” Gov. Jared Polis said in a news release.
Crusoe is active in Colorado’s Denver-Julesburg Basin, Wyoming’s Powder River Basin and the Bakken in North Dakota and eastern Montana. The company was considering a move to either Nebraska, Montana or North Dakota before deciding to stay in Denver.
On May 11, COEDIT announced that Strive Health, a startup kidney care provider, would add 250 new jobs at its growing Denver headquarters. Those jobs come with an average annual wage of $131,572. On May 6, Square Comp, a technology firm based in India, announced it would make Fort Collins its new U.S. headquarters, bringing 54 jobs paying an average annual wage of $54,145.
On April 20, Fluid Truck, a peer-to-peer truck sharing platform announced it would keep its headquarters in Denver and add 1,483 new jobs, and on April 15, VIZIO, best known for its televisions, announced it would bring 100 jobs to a new technology innovation office that will be based in Denver.
