Andrew Neil has clashed with the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion Roger Hallam over the protest groups’ position towards China. The veteran broadcaster challenged the activist over the disruptive tactics the climate group has used in the UK over recent years. Mr Neil accused Extinction Rebellion of looking to “disrupt life in Britain” while never mentioning the role of China in polluting the planet with fossil fuels.

Mr Neil said: “You disrupt life in Britain and we are responsible for less than one percent of emissions.

“But you never mention China.

“Which is responsible for 27 percent of global emissions.

“I look through all your blogs and everything you have done, I think there is one mention en passant about China.

“Why do you never mention China?”

Mr Hallam: “Well just coming back to being a good conservative dare I say it. A good conservative believes that there is a thing called honor.

“And what honor means is to do the right thing regardless of what other people are doing.

“The situation on the world at the moment is unless a significant number of people and nations move on this horrific potential eventually, which we can debate but everyone agrees its there.

China is a 'deep distinctive threat to the West' says IDS

“Them we risk the end of everything we believe in so everything I believe in and everything you believe in,” added the climate activist.

Mr Neil asked again: “So why not mention China which is now the biggest emitter?”

“Because as you well know here in  Britain we need to focus on what’s happening in the UK,” replied Mr Hallam.

“That is where we have the power, I don’t have the power.”

“You could go outside the Chinese embassy,” retorted the GB News host.

Mr Hallam replied: “You would be the first person who would say demonstrating outside the Chinese embassy with all due respect is not going to actually do anything.”

“How do you think your plan for mass civil disobedience would go down in Beijing,” quired Mr Neil.

“I would not even be allowed in the United States, let alone China,” replied the Extinction Rebellion co-founder.
