The Prime Minister said the UK is on course to ditch the 1-metre plus social distancing rule in June. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday insisted there is a “good chance” the rule will no longer apply as the UK continues to push on with coronavirus vaccinations at speed. Speaking during a local election campaign visit to the north of England, Mr Johnson said: “I think we’ve got a good chance, a good chance, of being able to dispense with one-metre plus.”

The was first introduced as one of the earliest measures to curb the number of Covid infections at the height of the pandemic last year.

Under the Government’s own roadmap out of lockdown, social distancing measures will be removed from June 21 but doubts about the move had begun to emerge in recent weeks – with suggestion mask-wearing and distancing would continue beyond the summer deadline.

The roadmap read: “Ahead of Step 4 [21 June], as more is understood about the impact of vaccines on transmission and a far greater proportion of the population has been vaccinated, the government will complete a review of social distancing measures and other long-term measures that have been put in place to limit transmission.

“The results of the review will help inform decisions on the timing and circumstances under which rules on 1m+, face masks and other measures may be lifted.”
