Once an adviser to Margaret Thatcher, Nile Gardiner riled tensions on either side of the debate with his claim on GB News that an early general election in response to the illegal party allegations against the PM could lead to “a far-left Government taking power in the UK that actually reverses Brexit.” Some read ers felt there was legitimacy to Mr Gardiner’s statements, arguing that as so much time has passed since the 2016 Brexit referendum, many Leave voters have since either changed their minds or even passed away.
Reader Lord Frosty said: “Over 4 million UK citizens have died since the 2016 referendum.
“Leave won by about 1,400,000 votes, I would think that has been severely eroded by now.
“Anyone of 23 today didn’t get a chance to vote in the referendum.
“I doubt many of them would vote for Brexit having seen what a disaster it is.
“So far I haven’t seen the considerable upside we were promised.”
Another reader stated: “My children were too young to vote in 2016.
“For how long do they have to respect the vote?”
The same reader referenced YouGov polls which show declining support for Brexit since the referendum.
The most recent YouGov poll, which concluded on the 12th January 2022, asked the question: “do you think Britain was right or wrong to vote to leave the European Union?”
49 percent of those surveyed said “wrong”, while only 38 percent said “right.”
The remaining 13 percent said they didn’t know.
However, many Express readers shared the sentiment that Brexit had happened whether or not Mr Johnson remains in power, and people need to accept it.
Guy Clapperton said: “We have left the EU. Not all of us like it but the fact is that we’ve gone.
“Johnson’s future has nothing to do with this.”
Another reader said: “What utter cobblers. We’re out, and never going back, so get over it!”
This was echoed by another reader, who said: “Brexit is done and dusted, why are people still trying to get something reversed that’s already happened?”

Finally, there were those readers who felt that Gardiner’s statements were part of a scheme by those who want to rejoin the EU to start the ball rolling for another referendum on the basis of “partygate.”
Angie said: “Boris is too successful and those who want to rejoin the EU want him out of the way.”
A reader added: “He is the only thing in Westminster keeping us out. Remainers believe if they get rid of him they will defeat the Brexiteers and take the country back into the EU.”
