Britain has been calling for a fix to the Protocol, describing the creation of an effective border down the Irish Sea as “unsustainable” in the long run. Unionists in Northern Ireland have accused the measures, implemented as part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, of impacting trade from Britain to the province.
Ms von der Leyen has rejected calls for the Protocol to be replaced saying there is “no alternative”.
On Monday, she said problems in trade were due to the UK’s decision to leave the single market.
Lord Frost reacted to the remarks from Ms von der Leyen, highlighting the importance of a fix.
And Britons have hit out at the Commission chief, with many claiming the Protocol should be replaced.
Commenting on an Express.co.uk story about the heated situation between the two, one reader said: “The Swiss have just pulled out of the trade talks with the EU.
“They could not afford to cede any portion of their sovereignty.
“We should follow that example. The EU is an unelected dictatorship.”
Another said: “It’s time for the original ‘deal’ that 17.4 million people voted for!
“A complete withdrawal from anything to do with the EU! In other words WTO and complete sovereignty!
“All fishing rights scrapped and treat them the same way that we are being treated!”
Someone else dubbed Ms von der Leyen as a “clueless and weak leader”.
And a fourth reader added: “Just have done with it and bin the whole rotten deal.

“Go WTO immediately and ban all further EU fishing in our waters until another agreement is reached.”
Another reader said: “If you can’t agree on a way forward and it’s not working, then scrap it.
“The integrity of the UK must come first. Use the clauses in the Protocol.”
A sixth person said: “The EU will try every trick in the book. But they are wasting their time we will never rejoin.”
Lord Frost accused the EU leader of refusing to appreciate the impact the Protocol was having on ordinary people.
He told the House of Lords: “We noted the comments of the Commission President earlier this week.
“The Protocol does rely on the support of all the communities of Northern Ireland so it is disappointing there wasn’t more recognition from her of the impact the operation of the Protocol is having in Northern Ireland.
“We continue with our discussions and hope to find pragmatic solutions.”
Lord Forst suggested he intends to confront the EU on the issues when the Withdrawal Agreement Joint Committee meets to discuss Brexit next month.
