Ms Truss said: “I have submitted my letter of resignation to the outgoing Prime Minister.

“I am humbled that Liz Truss extended her confidence in me by asking me to remain as Secretary of State for DCMS.

“I will always show her the same loyalty and support I have to Boris Johnson.”

The close ally to Mr Johnson said she had been “humbled” to be asked to remain in post but that “after much reflection” she had decided to step down.

Unusually her resignation letter made no reference to serving the Government from the backbenches of the House of Commons.

Her announcement has led to increased expectation that she will now be given a peerage in Mr Johnson’s resignation honours list.
