Scottish Ministers will enter structured talks with the Scottish Green Party, supported by the civil service, with a view to reaching a formal Co-operation Agreement.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the initiative is part of a refreshed pledge to change politics in Scotland for the better by working with opposition parties to find the best solutions to the toughest of problems.

Ms Sturgeon announced the deal as she committed to holding a second independence vote in the next Parliament.

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, Ms Sturgeon said: “This election result delivered a substantial majority in this Parliament for an independence referendum within the current term.

“There is no justification for the UK Government seeking to block that mandate.

“To do so would suggest the Tories no longer consider the UK to be a voluntary union of nations and it would be profoundly undemocratic.

“This term of Parliament will be the most important in our devolved history.”
