Ms Sturgeon has vowed to hold a second referendum soon, saying Brussels should “keep a light on” for Scotland after the UK left the EU. But with the increasing support for independence is being met with an equally ferocious pro-union campaign.

The First Minister of Scotland wasted no time after the Brexit transition period formally ended at 11pm on December 31st to issue a rallying cry.

Ms Sturgeon put her case forward for Scotland to leave the Union, pointing to Ireland taking a seat at the UN Security Council for the next two years

Ms Sturgeon wrote on Twitter: “As independent Ireland takes up her seat on the @UN Security Council today, not (yet) independent Scotland is taken out of the EU against our will.”

Ms Sturgeon also reiterated the SNP’s call for an independent Scotland to join the EU.

Tweeting a picture of the words Europe and Scotland attached by a love heart, she said: “Scotland will be back soon, Europe. Keep the light on.”

The image had previously been projected on to the side of the EU Commission building in Brussels.

Speaking to Express.co.uk earlier this week ahead of the New Year, SNP deputy leader Keith Brown said it was “beyond doubt” the only way to protect Scotland’s people and interests were to “become an independent country inside the EU.”

But Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross said Scots “don’t need to view everything through the prism of independence”.

In his New Year Message, Mr Ross said: “The perpetual and phoney grievance of the SNP must be challenged.”

He stressed the importance of the 2021 Holyrood elections saying the “it is no exaggeration to say the country’s future was at stake. “

He added: “On the ballot will be the SNPs obsessive determination to inflict another divisive independence referendum on the country.

“This, in the minds of the Nationalists, is more important than pulling together to help rebuild our shattered economy and a society scarred by the pandemic.

“They will give no credit to the strength of the United Kingdom, which was at its best in the face of the pandemic.
