A teary Adele took to Instagram last night to postpone her entire Las Vegas residency, just 24 hours before the opening night. She said: “Half my team have Covid and it’s been impossible to finish the show. I’m sorry, it’s last minute. I’m so upset and I’m really embarrassed.”
Dragging Brexit into the debate on Twitter, one Rejoiner-in-chief and anti-Brexit protester Steve Bray, known for shouting “Stop Brexit” outside Parliament, gave Adele more grief by implying that the headline news of Adele’s tour was unimportant and that instead the focus should be on lorries queuing up at Dover, “thanks to Brexit and new customs controls.”
Mr Bray then quipped back: “Maybe Adeles’s tour bus is stuck in the queue!”
Many of Adele’s fans and other celebrities have been supportive on social media, but others face losing hundreds of dollars from flight and hotel bookings.
Mr Bray asked for someone to “help” him understand “why Adele cancelling some Las Vegas gigs is newsworthy.” While there has been “no” mention of “miles and miles of lorries queues up at Dover thanks to Brexit and new customs controls.”
Brexit anger across the nation is continuing as a deal is still yet to be reached.
On Thursday former Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair said Boris Johnson has no plan for dealing with Brexit.
The last two weeks Dover has faced huge queues of lorries on the A20 and port bosses predict they may reach 20-miles long by the Easter holidays unless Covid checks are lifted.
On top of coronavirus checks, there are now new full customs controls on exports that have been in place since January 1, this red tape on UK imports has frustrated many business owners.
Chris Parker, director of capacity and passenger performance for DFDS ferry operator, told the Daily Mail: “It’s really, really important that we don’t find ourselves around Easter, for example, doing these sort of checks because it simply won’t work.”
Steve Cock, director of customs consultancy firm The Customs House, told The Independent: “It’s a bit of pickle at the moment.”
Liz Truss, New Foreign Secretary and Chief Brexit Negotiator is meeting with Maroš Šefčovič, the EU’s Brexit commissioner, to agree on a Northern Ireland protocol deal with the EU by end of February.
If Article 16 is invoked the situation in Dover could become worse.
Adele’s hit song from her Album 30 was entitled “Easy On Me”, The New European says: “that seems to be the approach the media are taking to the government on these [border] delays.”
