Universal Credit: Thérèse Coffey red-faced as DWP slammed with brutal Marcus Rashford jibe

Universal Credit: Thérèse Coffey faces Marcus Rashford jibe

During the Work and Pensions Committee, Conservative MP Nigel Mills quizzed the Minister on the UK Government’s future plans for universal credit. Mr Mills then delivered a brutal dig at the Tory Cabinet stating that he thought footballer and activist Marcus Rashford made the decisions for the UK Government.

Ms Coffey said: “I am part of a Government where we discuss our policy proposals internally and then have collective responsibility.

“So I am not going to try and use this to champion one cause or another when that is an active discussion that is ongoing.

“As you know I will put forward the collective agreed approach of the Government.”

Mr Mills replied: “There was me thinking that Marcus Rashford made these decisions.

“So I am glad to hear it is a collective decision by the Cabinet after all that.”

Marcus Rashford has consistently used his status as a high-profile footballer to lobby the Government into making changes to their policies.

The Manchester United striker has campaigned on issues such as child hunger and free school meals.

Earlier today Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan slammed the trolling Mr Rashford and other high-profile people have received on social media.

GMB: Piers Morgan labels Chris Whitty troll as ‘pathetic’

The GMB host was discussing online trolling following a video emerging on social media of England’s Chief Medical Officer being harassed.

Mr Morgan lambasted the actions of a man who taunted Professor Whitty in a video he labelled disgusting.

He said: “Professor Whitty is our Chief Medical Officer and is probably doing 18 to 20 hour days seven days a week to try and save our lives.

“The very least he deserves is our respect and yet he got that in the street from somebody clearly whipped up to believe Covid does not exist and is all lies.

“That video should disgust all of us in the same way that the trolling of Captain Tom and Marcus Rashford should disgust us.

“Where is our decency? That is a disgusting piece of footage.”

He added: “It is a pathetic indictment of where this country is going in terms of that nonsense on social media.”
