A 15-year-old suspected in Brighton shooting death of Joseph Johnson

A 15-year-old girl has been arrested as a suspect in the shooting death of a 44-year-old Brighton man.

Just after midnight Tuesday, officers were sent to the 400 block of North 6th Avenue on a welfare check for a “man who had not been heard from in several days,” according to a Brighton Police Department news release.

Officers found the body of Joseph Johnson, who had been shot, inside a residence, police said.

About 1 p.m. Tuesday investigators arrested the teenage suspect in Castle Rock. She was taken to the Brighton police headquarters and then booked into the Prairie Vista Youth Services Detention Center, police said, for investigation of murder and motor vehicle theft.

The suspect’s identity was not released because of her age. The police investigation will be presented to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges.
