As part of the their exit from the royal family, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have confirmed they will not "return as working royals”.

But a new survey reveals that nearly half of Brits believe the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have let the Royal Family down.

Asked whether the Royal Family would be better off without Meghan and Harry, opinions were divided, with roughly 30% voting each way.

The survey, by Savanta ComRes, found that 45% of people thought the couple made the right decision in stepping down from the Royal Family, but a similar proportion felt that they had let Prince Harry’s family down.

43% of respondents to survey also said that their opinion of Harry and Meghan was worse than it was a year ago.

When asked if the Duke and Duchess were right to agree to next month’s interview with US chat show legend Oprah Winfrey, 37% of the 2189 people polled said it was the wrong thing to do, while only 21% thought it was a good idea.

E! News reported that a source close to the couple had said that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would be "speaking their truth" in the 90-minute TV special and added "The interview is going to shine a light on what they have been through. Meghan and Harry are relieved they are away from it all."

Chris Hopkins, associate director of Savanta ComRes, said: “Significant proportions of the public – almost half – feel Harry and Meghan have let the Royal Family down, yet back their decision to step away from official Royal life, and therefore there’s a sense from this that the public feel this is the best course of action considering the acrimony that’s played out over the last few years.

“The fact that people are almost equally split over whether or not the Royal family is better with Harry and Meghan in it speaks volumes as to how they’re now perceived, although the public still feel that the tell-all Oprah interview next month is a step too far, even for ex-Royals.”

Rival survey company YouGov also published a survey about public opinions of the couple this week, which revealed that just under half of British people thought that Prince Harry should lose his place in the royal succession.

At present, Harry’s sixth in line for the throne.
