Vladimir Putin was sent a grave warning by US President Joe Biden over his potential deployment of nuclear weapons in Ukraine. In a direct address to the Russian President, US President Joe Biden urged him to steer clear from executing his nuclear threat. Else, the United States would be forced to strike back with a “consequential” response.

CBS’s news anchor Scott Pelley started by asking President Biden: “As Ukraine succeeds on the battlefield, Vladimir Putin is becoming embarrassed and pushed into a corner.

“And I wonder, Mr President, what you would say to him if he is considering using chemical or tactical nuclear weapons.”

President Biden said: “Don’t. Don’t. Don’t. You will change the face of war unlike anything since World War 2.”

When CBS’s Pelley pressed on the consequences would be if Putin crossed the nuclear line, the American President refused to give an answer.

He said: “You think I would tell you if I knew exactly what it would be? Of course, I’m not gonna tell you.

“It’ll be consequential.

“They’ll become more of a pariah in the world than they ever have been. And depending on the extent of what they do will determine what response would occur.”

Vladimir Putin has put Russia’s nuclear forces on “special” alert following the invasion of Ukraine in February.

So far, he has only issued veiled nuclear threats to the West, stoking fears around the world that he could be prepared to launch nuclear weapons at Russia’s enemies.

In a speech on February 24, Putin referred to Russia’s nuclear arsenal and warned foreign powers that any attempts to interfere would “lead you to such consequences that you have never encountered in your history.”

But contradicting his earlier statement, the Russian leader said in early August there could be no winners in a nuclear war and no such war should ever be ignited.

In a letter to participants of a conference on the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT), Putin said: “We proceed from the fact that there can be no winners in a nuclear war and it should never be unleashed, and we stand for equal and indivisible security for all members of the world community.”

Russia is estimated to have around 6,000 warheads, according to the Federation of American Scientists.
