Boy, two, killed after being struck by car as police launch probe

A young boy has died after being hit by a car in a residential road.

The two-year-old toddler was struck in Charnwood Place, Dumfries, Scotland, at around 6.50pm on Friday, April 2.

Police say the incident involved a Honda Civic and a two-year-old child, who was rushed to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary after the collision but tragically died a short time later.

The 54-year-old man driving the car was reportedly left uninjured.

Police have now issued an appeal for anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact them and would particularly like to speak to anyone with CCTV overlooking the road.

Sergeant Bob McNay, from Police Scotland's road policing unit, said: "Our thoughts are with the child's family at this time, following their tragic loss.

"The investigation into the incident is ongoing and we are asking for anyone who was in the area and witnessed the events to please come forward.

"We are also keen to speak to anyone who may have CCTV overlooking the Charnwood Place area to get in contact, as they may be able to assist our inquiries.

"If you have any information, please contact police on 101, quoting incident 3597 of April 2, 2021."

Following the incident, mourners have flocked to social media to send their condolences to the child's family and emergency services personnel who attended the scene.

"There aren’t actually any words, my deepest condolences to the family suffering such a horrific bereavement," one woman wrote.

Another woman added: "Words fail me, my condolences and heart felt sorrow to the family of this little one.

"My thoughts are with all involved including the emergency services who attended."
