Sun seekers planning on a Spanish summer holiday might have to change plans as the country could be placed on the amber-plus list next week which would mean a 10-day quarantine on return to the UK.
France is already on the amber-plus list but government sources have told The Sun that it could also be removed in the coming week.
A rise in Beta variant cases led to quarantining suddenly being enforced on travellers returning from France earlier this month.
New government rules meant that European countries on the amber list could be visited by people who have had both vaccine doses and they could return to the UK without having to quarantine for 10 days.
The plans were introduced to allow people to go away on holiday this summer but ministers have kept a close eye on infection rates and are imposing extra restrictions where necessary.

A government source has told the Daily Mail that there is now concern about the Beta variant in Spain.
They said: "The situation in Spain is beginning to feel a lot like the build-up to the decision on France.
"The Department of Health are getting very jumpy about the number of Beta cases in parts of the country.
"We're not talking about the main tourist hotspots, but that might not make any difference – it didn't with France."

However, officials have said that Spain will not be included in the travel review early next month.
A Department for Transport spokesperson reportedly said: "The travel list allocations have not changed for Spain or Greece."
At the same time it is possible that Germany and Austria could be added to the green list.
Ministers are meeting today to consider whether to exempt double-jabbed European and US travellers from quarantine rules in England.
