Coban Porter, a University of Denver basketball player and the brother of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr., has been charged with four felony counts in connection to a fatal Jan. 22 DUI car crash.
According to a Denver District Attorney’s Office news release, Coban Porter was charged with vehicular homicide — DUI; vehicular homicide — reckless driving; vehicular assault — DUI; and vehicular assault — reckless driving in the death of Katharina Rothman, 42, and the “serious bodily injury” of Rothman’s 47-year-old passenger.
Porter, 21, had “bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred and mumbling speech, and the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath” after the crash, Corporal Aaron Botts wrote in the partially redacted probable cause affidavit.
Denver police allege Porter was driving at about 50 mph headed east on East Buchtel Boulevard early in the morning of Jan. 22 when he ran a red light at South University Boulevard and crashed into Rothman’s vehicle that was headed north on University, according to the affidavit. The posted speed limit at that intersection, which is close to the University of Denver’s campus, is 30 mph.
Porter was arrested at the crash scene, police said, and was booked into the Denver jail. He was released on a $20,000 bond, according to the Denver Sheriff Department.
He came to Denver after committing to the University of Denver men’s basketball program in 2021, following stints with Father Tolton Catholic in Columbia, Missouri, and Link Prep in Branson, Missouri. He appeared in 28 games as a freshman with the Pioneers last season.
He was injured during the offseason and has been unable to practice with the team this year because of the injury.
A university spokesperson declined to answer questions about Porter’s enrollment or status on the basketball team, saying “both as school policy and federal law, we cannot discuss individual student matters.”
