Dog left to starve to death in frozen dustbin unrecognisable 12 months later

A dog that was left to starve to death after being dumped in a dustbin looks unrecognisable one year on from the traumatic ordeal.

Madi was thrown amongst the rubbish as she tried to tackle the freezing conditions in the Romanian town of Targu Neamt last year.

Fortunately, the cute pooch was saved by kind-hearted strangers in the North East who teamed up with rescuers in Romania to find dogs a loving home in the UK.

Maaz Rahman and Nicci Knight took Madi into their care in Teeside, Middlesbrough, who have since found her an exciting new role, reports ITV.

After discovering that Madi was a gentle dog with a kind nature, her owners decided to get her trained to serve with the charity Pets As Therapy.

The pooch made big strides and was soon assigned to help children at Butterwick Hospice Care in Stockton in her first role. She has since helped support autistic children at the Mackenzie Thorpe Centre on Teesside.

Her owner Nicci Knight commented: "Despite everything she's gone through herself, Madi's got so much love to give, so we thought this was the perfect way to spread the happiness that she's brought into our lives. She's so caring and gentle that we quickly realised she would make the ideal therapy dog."

Nicci and Maaz are hoping for the cute pooch to be able to visit schools, hospitals and associations in the future.

Over in Manchester, a street dog who was also abandoned in Romania, has found its forever home after she was left partially blind from a deadly disease called distemper.

Damaris was saved by a kind rescuer before she was adopted in the UK after no one wanted her overseas due to her being a "little bit different".

Fortunately, after just three days of being in the UK with Dogs 4 Rescue, Damaris had been fostered and then went on to be adopted by Louise and her family.

“When I saw her photo my heart melted and I knew I would do anything I could to give her a good life, " said Louise.

"Her missing eye and tremors make her even more special to us."
