Grandmother dies after being savaged by stray pit bull she rescued

Ex-pat British grandmother, 67, dies after stray pit bull she rescued at her Spanish holiday home savaged her in horrific attack

  • She died in hospital after having suffered ‘catastrophic’ head and arm injuries

A grandmother has died after she suffered ‘catastrophic’ injuries when the pit bull she had rescued suddenly turned on her.

Anne Shields, 67, was mauled by the dog, which she called Choccy, at her holiday home in Spain. She had taken him in as a starving stray.

Her daughter told The Sun that Ms Shields never intended to keep the dog, but the local animal shelters were full so she opted to care for him ‘until she found someone who could take him.’

The British ex-pat was reportedly an animal lover and ‘couldn’t bear the thought of throwing Choccy back on the streets.’

Police were called to Ms Shields’ home in Macastre, near Valencia, after neighbours reported hearing her screams.

Officers shot the dog so the medics could reach the pensioner who had suffered head and arm injuries.

Ms Shields was taken to hospital where she died the next day.

‘It’s a nightmare,’ her daughter Sarah, 43, said of the attack. ‘She stuck with him and then this happened.’

Sarah said her mother was ‘very caring’ and that her loved ones will ‘miss her so much.’

Pit bulls are not banned in Spain like they are in the UK. A license is needed to own one, however, as they are considered ‘potentially dangerous.’
