How Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie were locked in a 'spell state' with S&M dynamics common in abusive relationships

BODYCAM footage of when Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie were pulled aside by police reveals the couple was locked in a “spell state,” according to a psychologist.

Dr. Orna Guralnik, a Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalyst from New York, exclusively told The Sun that the couple showed signs of S&M dynamics in their interaction with Moab police, which is common in abusive relationships.

Guralnik, was featured on Showtime’s documentary series Couples Therapy earlier this year, where she worked with various couples in their troubled relationships.

The couple showed tendencies of sadomasochistic dynamics, which when one person enjoys inflicting physical or mental suffering on another person.

Guralnik said, “In this dynamic, one becomes more abusive and the other becomes passive and docile.

“The bond in those cases can be very, very strong.

“It’s like they’re locked in a certain kind of spell state between them and there are lots of cases of domestic abuse that follow that pattern.”

She proceeds to describe S&M as a pattern that makes it very hard for two individuals to separate as they are in a “fierce, perverse bond.”

The van was pulled aside near the entrance to Arches National Park, as police were responding to a call about a fight the couple had outside the Moonflower Cafe.

Moments before police pulled the couple over, an officer tells a dispatcher that the van driven by Laundrie was speeding and had hit a curb.

Bodycam footage revealed that Gabby and Laundrie were immediately separated and questioned by cops.

Guralnik said the couple “clearly didn’t want to have the cops help them disentangle from each other.

“They wanted to continue, none of them said ‘please get me out of here.’”

“They were locked into this kind of spell.”

The footage, captured 13 days before Gabby was last seen in alive, shows van-life YouTuber sobbing to police after the couple drove the transit van into the curb during a fight.

'LOCKED IN A SPELL'

Guralnik commended the cops for how they took their time investigating the couple and examining every minor injury.

The 77-minute bodycam footage revealed the officers were trying very hard to figure out what was going on and to make sure they were safe.

Guralnik said that Laundrie clearly knew how to “play well” with the cops and his behavior “can be interpreted to have sociopathic elements to it.”

“But if he was sociopathic and he managed to charm his way out of that, clearly  they were in some kind of locked-in bond between them.”

“I would imagine Gabby didn't want to know or she didn't want to realize how bad things were for her and couldn't break out of the spell of whatever was going on between them.

“If she really felt like ‘Oh, my God, this guy's about to kill me,’ she would have had an opportunity to say to the cops, ‘Please get me out of here and take me home.’”

WHERE IS BRIAN?

The search for Laundrie is currently in its fifth week as authorities continue to track down leads and attempt to find the 23-year-old.

While authorities have yet to locate him, former US Marshal, Lenny DePaul, believes that he is "sleeping with one eye open" because "innocent people don’t run."

Authorities are currently continuing their investigation in the Appalachian Trail while many still believe that he build a doomsday bunker and is hiding out under his parents' flower bed.

On October 17, 2021, it was announced that US Marshals ambushed a Laundrie "lookalike" on the trail but it was later determined that the suspect wasn't him.

Despite countless leads, as of October 18, Brian still remains missing and if he is not found soon, cops may have to pull resources from the investigation.

ON THE RUN

Laundrie vanished from his parents’ home on September 13, the family’s lawyer confirmed. Gabby’s remains were discovered in rural Wyoming on September 19.

On Thursday, September 23, the FBI issued a warrant for Laundrie’s arrest, claiming he “used unauthorized debit cards after Gabby Petito’s death.”

His whereabouts remain unknown.

On October 12, 2021, Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue confirmed that Gabby’s cause of death was due to strangulation.

She died as a result of homicide.

Blue added that Gabby’s predicted death was three to four weeks before her body was found.

The body was outside “in the wilderness” for this time.
