As Charles and Diana's marriage fell apart, the Duke of Edinburgh pledged to do what “do my utmost” to help.
According to letters written to Diana from the Duke, Prince Philip was on good terms with his daughter-in-law when she split from his son Prince Charles, despite what biographies and documentaries claim.
A biography of the Duke released last year claimed Princess Diana had told friends of her dislike for him and had warned her sons to “never shout at anyone the way Prince Philip does”.
He also allegedly regarded her as a “loose cannon” after her infamous 1995 BBC Panorama interview with Martin Bashir.
But heavily censored letters between father-in-law and daughter-in-law actually suggest they were on good terms when she separated from the Prince of Wales.
The letters, which were revealed at an inquest of the princess and Dodi Al Fayad in 2007, showed that the princess affectionately referred to him as her "Dearest Pa."
In one letter, sent to Diana in the summer of 1992 just three months after the publication of Morton’s book, the Duke said he would do his “utmost” to help the couple, with the princess replying: “You really do care", iNews reports.

In another letter from Diana, she wrote: "I would like you to know how much I admire you for the marvellous way in which you have tried to come to terms with this intensely difficult family problem.”
The coroner at the inquest, Lord Justice Scott Baker said he had read the letters in full and there was nothing “unpleasant, nasty or insulting” in them.
However, Diana’s healer, Simone Simmons, that there were other letters from 1994 or 1995 was in a 'different tone' that made the Princess furious.

But Prince Philip categorically denied there was any animosity between them in an unprecedented statement he released in 2002.
He claimed there was never “curt or unfeeling” in his letters to Diana and any suggestions he wrote derogatory terms were a “gross misrepresentation” of his relationship with his daughter-in-law.
