The Hermit State’s portly leader launched his crackdown last year, with one unnamed source telling US-funded website Radio Free Asia the Central Committee of the Korean Workers’ Party was cracking down on immoral sexual deviance in boys and girls at high school. Now the Supreme leader – who was the subject of widespread rumours about his health last year – appears to have given the order to make an example of one youngster, according to the NK News website.

The crackdown and punishments are likely to intensify for the time being given that the ‘anti-reactionary thought law’ is still in the early stage of implementation

A source in North in North Pyongan Province said the youngster was watching a pornographic video late at night when his parents were not at home when he was caught during a surprise inspection by a task force created to keep tabs on “deviant” behaviour.

He, together with his parents, was consequently exiled to the countryside.

The source said: “The crackdown and punishments are likely to intensify for the time being given that the ‘anti-reactionary thought law’ is still in the early stage of implementation.

“Moreover, Kim Jong-un stated that ‘non-socialism is a malignant tumour that hinders unity’ and declared a ‘more intensive struggle against the non-socialist phenomenon’ at the Second Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the Workers’ Party on February 8.”

The draconian measures were initiated in accordance with Article 29 of the so-called “anti-reactionary thought law”, which call for sentences of five to 15 years of correctional labour for consumption or possession of pornographic videos or books, photos or drawings which “preach superstition”, NK News reported.

Individuals who produce, import or distribute such materials face life sentences in labour camps – and can even be sentenced to death.

Articles 34-38 require fines ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 North Korean Won if a “reactionary thought crime occurs” happens as a result of the irresponsible education of children, as well as the family in question being forced to move to the countryside.

The principal of the school which the boy attended is also understood to have received the “revolutionary punishment” of unpaid labour – although he was not demoted.

Speaking to RFA last year, another insider said: A source told Radio Free Asia: “Recently more and more high school boys and girls are engaging in immoral sexual deviance, and the Central Committee of the Korean Workers’ Party has issued a directive calling for strong measures against them.

“The reason behind this order is that the local Kimilsungist-Kimjongilist Youth League in Sinuiju inspected high school students, and found that some high school boys and girls hang out with local gangsters, live together, and commit immoral acts such as prostitution.

“The immoral sexual behaviour of students, who are influenced by capitalist lifestyles, has become a problem.

“The committee defined sexual promiscuity among teenagers as a treasonous act that helps the enemy to destroy our society.

“And since they are warning of strong punishment, students are shaking with fear.”

A report published in 2005 by New Focus International based on interviews with North Korean defectors suggested widespread ignorance about sex in the secretive communist state, with one 16-year-old believing a woman could become pregnant by holding hands with a man and falling asleep.

The Central Committee was last year reported to have concluded that “sexual promiscuity” was common as a result of western influences, largely as a result of the rise of electronic media.

The source told RFA: “In order to prevent this, they ordered schools to check students for phones or other devices they might have with them.”

This is done via an application present on all mobile phones in the Hermit State called Red Flag, which keeps a record of all sites visited by users and randomly takes screenshots that can be viewed by the authorities later.

In addition, officials are “taking measures to control the teens’ unhealthy sexual activity,” the source added.

Many have also blamed the “increase in deviance” on the postponement of the school year as a result of concerns about the risk posed by coronavirus – even though North Korea has never officially admitted to having any cases.

Kim – who is believed to be 37 – is married to Ri Sol-ju and has several children.

Despite his apparently puritanical attitude towards the behaviour of North Korean citizens, he has apparently adopted a different attitude when it comes to himself, famously having splashed out hundreds of thousands of pounds on Hennessy cognac and other luxury Western goods.
